I have a few confessions

Sometimes, when the children are out, I throw out things that I think they don't need anymore.

IMG_1025_2

I am very selective about which artwork I keep (after display).

I use television to babysit my children (yes I am in the house when I do this).

IMG_1042_2

I take my children to McDonalds.

IMG_1026

I once sent a big bucket of small blocks to the childminders, as I was sick of picking them up at my house.

I feel similarly about playdough.

IMG_1034_2

I confess I am normal.

However last night I camped in the garden with my three. We had a feast, read a long story, listened to music, larked about, took photos, and had a great time. Balance is restored.

Nine days away!

I never knew Wales was so beautiful!Four wonderful days of touring about, a few long  boozy dinners with my cousin who we visited, and just spending time with my husband.

I never thought I would get to go to Centerparcs (Longleat)and cheaply at that. Well I have been beside myself and it was absolutely brilliant. Just to see the kids swimming improve was amazing.

I did know that lions mated quite a few times a day, but didn't realise they would do it in front of three small children. (Longleat Park)

We have had a wonderful time. Absolutely the best holiday. No photos as I am wading through housework and washing.

Beach talk

IMG_0739

I have had such a lovely few days in Donegal. Just after Easter we all went to Kerrykeel, to spend the Monday and Tuesday there. We then went back down on the Friday to the Sunday. We discovered some new beaches, had a barbeque, sorted out the flower beds, cooked very little for a change, and lit the wood burning stove.

IMG_0734

The amazing thing was that I think we really started to chill as soon as we got there. And it was so lovely; about half an hour after getting there we heard a 'Halloooo' from downstairs. It turned out my best chum from school days was staying nearby, in Portsalon, and she had checked our house on the off chance of us being there.

IMG_0752

It was really good to catch up, and within a few hours we were all sitting in the pub in Portsalon, she with her husband and three children, us with our squad; looking out to sea and drinking Guinness. The kids have a favourite drink called 'Football Special' which is made in nearby Ramelton and is like a cross between cream soda and Iron Bru. It is really nice (good for hangovers I believe). You couldn't want more than a bag of crisps and a Football Special if you are a kid (or a hungover adult).

I had been quite inspired (or should I say frantic) by 'Big bucket girls' discovery of so many starfish on her local beach. She had blogged about it, and I was quite desperate to see some on our beaches. She said it was their breeding season. I love starfish and we have found a few over the past two years. So off we went, all starry-eyed, peering into lots of pools, and into every crack and cranny.

IMG_0741

Well I am mystified. Not one did I see, which leads me to conclude that Irish starfish are quite bashful and conduct all antics during breeding season in a very deep dark crevice, away from prying eyes. A bit like Irish people, unless they have had too many Guinness, and not enough 'Football Specials'.

Those Welsh starfish have no shame.

Kerrykeel, Donegal

HPIM0744

Would you mind going over to a blog I have created to advertise our house in Donegal? I am hoping that the blog, since it is free, will do instead of a website and will help us to rent it out. I could do with some constructive feedback. It's at www.relaxinkerrykeel.blogspot.com

When we first had the house, I knew the plan was to rent it out, but I wasn't sure how I would feel about it. Now two years later I am content with the thought of it. We don't use it enough just to keep it sitting there. The farming keps us at home a lot. And it is lovely, really it is. My sister said; "people will just love that place the minute they step into it, it is just stunning". Well, I was stunned, she doesn't throw the compliments about much.

So the website is done, I have leaflets printed out; now we just need our first punters. Any help, advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I am hoping to get down there over the next few days, just to get down to the beach, take a few more photos, get the stove on for a while, and plan what wildflowers to grow this year. I hope you have a lovely Easter.

Grrrrr

Do you know what I hate?

I really, really dislike toilet cubicles that are really narrow, and they put one of those stinky bins wedged up between the wall and the toilet seat. Even if your bum isn't that big, and mine is 'fairly' normal, it is difficult not to touch the stinky bin.

Designed by a woman?

I THINK NOT.

Also, whilst I am on this topic, I really hate hand dryers that aren't sure. You know what I mean you stick your hand under them and they go on...then off, then quickly on for a quick burst...then off again. So you actually dry your hands by the motions you make trying to get the fecking hand dryer to SENSE you are there. It should 'know' that yes your hands really are there, and there is someone else standing waiting to use it too!

....and breathe......

Just listen

Aw, I cannot get enough of this song from Snow Patrol. Just listen to it, and then listen to it again. Can you picture the room, the cold radiator, the love filled lyrics are just so innocent and filled with longing and remind me of very early days with my man. So heady and romantic!

Note that the 2nd verse does not describe a child hammering on the door demanding cheerios, or that they figure out how to unlock the stupid door and cry as you shout at them to go away!

IMG_0441

Thank God for weekend cartoons!

Went to see Snow Patrol last Monday night in Belfast. It was just amazing. Cannot use enough superlatives, honestly, try to see them in concert. It was a present from my husband, which must mean he loves me.

Hopefully though he'll not crack the shutters open wide. Ten watt bulb more like!

Now how did I end up doing this post?

Gifts

The gift of nature, and seeds.

IMG_0655

On St Patricks day I started to plant my seeds and plan my raised beds for this year. I miss my Australian friend so much, it made me smile though to see her hand-writing on the envelopes we shared last year. We had so many plans and a meeting of minds about growing our own stuff, and I am really excited she has plans to grow things where she is too. It is so tropical there, it will be interesting to see what she grows. I hope my seeds have lasted okay as I am using up ones from last year in a lot of cases. At least with starting this early, if I see they aren't coming up I will be able to buy some more.

IMG_0656

I haven't taken photos but lots of seedlings are up already on my conservatory windowsill. It is so bitterly cold outside though I will wait a while before planting them out. Pease carrots and potatoes are out though, planted direct. Fingers crossed!

IMG_0658

The gift of time.

As I said, the lambing has started. I took two weeks off work to help my husband. The first week was so beautiful, and though we had a bad start to it all, we had fewer casualties as the week progressed. Then this last week the weather has been so poor and our maternity suite has become very busy. We can't let them out to the fields as the lambs will perish, and the blasted sheep all began lambing at once. We had three days where the lambs just kept popping out, twelve one day, fifteen the next, sixteen the day after that. My poor husband was getting so stressed, and we lost some lambs to bad weather and bad luck.

IMG_0663

I had many plans for my two weeks off. I would help him, but also begin clearing out the house, and pack some things. Well, that went to the wall. I managed to take three bin-liners to a charity shop, one big box of toys to our childminders, and two bags to a friends. I also cleaned out two cupboards. Not bad really now I write it down, but no boxes are packed with our belongings.

So I gave my time to my husband, and I really enjoyed being with him. I know how much he appreciated it. But for everyone out there reading this, don't for one minute think "awwww, wee lambkins how sweet....what a 'good-life' they are having". It is not romantic, and it is not the good life. It is back-breaking, stooping over the little lamb, feeding it out of a bottle or syringe. We were feeding seven at one stage, four times a day. My face is scorched from the finger numbing wind and rain that battered us as we counted and fed the sheep each day. Most days I smelt really bad, and my water proof leggings did nothing for my look.

IMG_0677

'Country living' would not have put me in their feature, unless it was a very far away picture. My husband is just absolutely shattered, and the children have had to get into farming clothes most days, and potter about outside amusing themselves. Most requests are met with,' no I'm too busy'. We both feel guilty that we can't spend any time with them.

The time I gave has been at the expense of myself and the kids. And it was gladly given. He pours hour after hour into the farm, and something has to change. It really does. We both know that this is not what we want from our lives. I do not want to look back and see that we let the farm take so much time from us, with not enough in return. There is a lot to figure out.

Last night we went out with friends, tonight my husband is making a treasure hunt for the kids. I have coq au vin with roasties in the oven. We will savour the feeling of just being inside and having a good weekend. It is a gift in itself.

Blogging gift

IMG_0669

Finally, I received a gift in the post from a blogging friend, Anne (Frayed at the edge). I was so amazed at her thoughtfulness, and for also being able to get my taste so spot on. Thank-you Anne, I love the old american sheet. I really need my machine fixed so I can get going again. Acts like this and the comments people leave are so lovely, and are truly appreciated. Have a lovely week everyone. I am back to my other work.

Winners!!

IMG_0653

Well I am sure you must have thought I was re-reading my crafters companion, one page a day. I have been so busy, no time to blog at all.

IMG_0654

Today I did pick out two pieces of named paper from my make-up bag. Beata has won the edging, and Anne Donald the book. Congratulations! Send me your addresses and I will post them off to you.

We are lambing here at the moment. You might remember that things were very difficult last year at this time. My father in law was deteriorating fast, and we had our sheep plus his to lamb. There are so many reminders this year. Thankfully the lambing is going okay these last few days ( the first few days were bad, a lot died), so it always feels easier to cope when they thrive. I got the kids to agree to 'no complaining' after giving them a rousing speech about working together, (Obama would make me chief speech writer, honestly) and they get all rigged up in their outdoor gear without much fuss. It has worked well, they play on the bales of bedding and help a bit filling buckets. There is no doubt it is good to be out and about.

IMG_0652

I will try to post a few photos of them when I get the chance. I am playing an active role this year, as I did last but we are all less sad so it feels different. I lambed a ewe yesterday, and it was great. I can't believe that I like it but I do. Not sure how the ewe felt though. She's a quiet type.

IMG_0650

We had a comic relief fund-raising day at school and it was great. My eldest has a mad hair day and my son had a pyjama day. It was funny when has lift came in the morning he shouted 'quick, where's my dressing gown?!' No coat for him! Excuse the red eyes, I am too busy to edit!

IMG_0651

This is just a quiet weekend. The kids are off Monday and Tuesday for St Patricks but we won't be going anywhere, perhaps just arrange for them to see friends. I am off work for 2 weeks now, just to help. However I will be doing a bit of house organising, getting rid of things, and making plans for our extension. It won't be long until we move out so I need to get organised.

Oh Help! How to be a TGM #3

When You Marry by Be the HBIC.

When I was a teenager, I could never understand why my mother had never told me about babies, periods, sex etc. I was sure that when I grew up, got married and had children, I would have such a wonderful relationship with them that I would be explaining all this without a problem. And so it has been, every so often they ask a question and I answer it with a little knowledge. We had got as far as babies grow in tummies and mummies have eggs. Also they know that seeds grow in tummies. It was all information given out at different times you understand, I know that sounds like a very mixed up picture. By the way, if you want to know what a TGM is , I wrote about this last year as a bit of a p*ss take, it stands for 'thoroughly good mother'.

Well this morning my 8 year old daughter asked me how the babies actually get in there though, how do they get in there to start growing?

I knew the time had come. 'Can I tell you when the two younger one's aren't around?' And so it was agreed.

So off I went to work, emailed my good friend in Australia, spoke to two other friends at coffee and lunch time. I also googled 'telling children about the birds and the bees'

Not panicking though!

I think the scary thing was, how much should I say, and how to go about it. What words should I use. I was scared of a look of horror on her wee face. 'Mummy!' she might say; 'I can't believe you've done that three times with Daddy!' (that actually happened to a friend of mine). The fact that not knowing was such a big deal for me when I was 9/10 now meant I felt such a burden of responsibility to get it right.

So after I consulted Amazon for a highly rated book, I went to my local library on the way home and got the said book. Doing well for a psychotic control freak mother, eh?! Read the book. She could see that someday, but I needed to ascertain how much she knew or needed to know. By the way, that is not that book pictured above! Can you imagine!?

At bedtime I put the other two to bed.

'Can we play x's and o's?' she said.

'No, I'd like a wee chat if that is okay? 'I said

' Oh' she giggled, 'a wee chat'

So we snuggled up in her pink pre-pubescent bed, and I started.

'Well, you know you asked me about babies this morning, I thought I would explain a bit about that'.

She was all ears.

I asked a few questions about what she knew and why she was asking. Found out she knows virtually nothing, no friends have been talking.

So far, so good. I gulped. 'Well, I am so glad you asked me about this. I always want you to come to me when you have questions like this. You can also ask Daddy (heh, heh). Now, you know how puppies are made' Our dog had ten this summer.

'Yes, but how do they get in there?'

Right, I was really going to have to explain this from the very beginning. So, we talked about the sheep and how the ram mates with the sheep.

'Gosh, the ram has a lot of wives, that's a lot of ewes to kiss!' She was not taking the thing seriously at all. Brilliant, this made it easier.

'Well, humans mate too, women have the eggs, and men have the seeds'

This took a bit of explaining, with the word 'vagina' being found incredibly hilarious as it rhymes with 'in china'.

I explained it simply 'the seed gets put into the mummy, and it mixes with the egg, and that forms babies.' I waited for the realisation to form on her face about what grown-ups do.

'Ah, I see; can we play x's and o's now?'

'Yes' I said enthusiastically, 'that sounds like a great idea'

So we played the game, and I resisted the urge to place a 'y' beside her carefully plotted 'x'

Use your loaf (tin).

IMG_0579

It takes me an age to work my way towards baking. Now that I have temporarily inherited a lovely 'Nigella' cakedome, I meant to get round to it for weeks. You can just about see the dome in the photo below. To be honest, the real owner told me that it needed banana bread in it. Finally, I had a free morning, and the fact that my husband was outside working made the thought of it all the sweeter. Undoubtedly I never bake for myself, it has to be appreciated. I inwardly glow if someone just happens to call in, and I have a homemade cake to hand. It happens so rarely you see.

IMG_0591

The banana bread is a recipe that my friend gave me. I fiddled with it, took out cherries and added more walnuts. It really is good. The other loaf (much fewer calories when you bake a cake in a loaf tin!) is a lemon syrup loaf from 'How to be a domestic goddess'. If you have this book, and normally just pass on by this; please rewind and give this a go, so simple and zingy. It is now top of my list.

I like loaf tin cakes. They look harmless, almost wholesome. I cut slabs; much nicer than cake wedges. The kids were beside themselves choosing which one to go for, mean mother that I am. Don't worry, there are so many loaf eating opportunities in one day, that they got several chances!

IMG_0592

Thank-you so much for all the ideas re the giveaway. I will pick out a winner in a few days. I would encourage anyone else to leave their names too.
